Baseline survey was conducted in Majoreni and Kiwegu sub-locations in Lunga Lunga Sub-county, Kwale County. The study was undertaken within a five Kilometers radius from the Asante Ginger Farm in Mwamose Village, covering a total of twelve villages, in the two locations of Vanga and Pongwe Kidimu. The baseline survey was designed to cover eight outputs namely; Population characteristics, Road infrastructure, Schools and education conditions, water infrastructure, social facilities, population characteristics, existing farm enterprises and other community assets.
The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study, because it seeks to present the existing situation which provides the basis upon which any planned intervention to improve this situation can be assessed at various points in the future.
In all, seventy seven (77) homesteads distributed across the twelve (12) villages that were covered, three school heads from the existing primary schools in the study area, one chief and two sub-chiefs, and four (4) opinion leaders were involved in the study. Also included in the study were relevant government departmental heads at the county and sub-county levels. These were; departments of water resources, agriculture, roads and infrastructure, health and education.
As a social enterprise, Asante Foundation recently started working with doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation which is doTERRA’s non-profit organization committed to improving lives through partnering with organizations that offer hope to millions around the world. Healing Hands Foundation seeks to bring healing and hope to the world, help those who live lives free of disease and poverty, and to ultimately empower impoverished communities with the tools needed to become self-reliant. Healing Hands Foundation is fully funded by doTERRA, a multinational essential oils company as part of its corporate social responsibility. This Foundation whose mission resonates with Asante Foundation’s social aspect of business has expressed interest and willingness to contribute premiums from all produce in the intended area of the survey, towards a community development fund. It is for this reason that Asante Foundation commissioned Gondwana Watch International Limited to carry out a baseline survey of the area with the aim of meeting the following objective:
- To understand the needs of the communities by first establishing the existing family welfare, infrastructure and assets existing within the community.
- This is in order to use the information obtained to guide decisions on the focus and priorities for the community development funds.
- The information will also provide the benchmark for assessing the impact of the partnership between Asante Foundation and Healing Hands Foundation in development work on the community’s well-being.
In the area under study, crop farming is the main source of income followed by livestock keeping. Salaried employment is very low while fishing has not been fully exploited.
It was observed that there is a big potential to raise the income of the local farmers through sensitization on proper crop and livestock husbandry. Asante Foundation is well positioned to harness the opportunity of getting markets for the farm produce.
